On August 21, 2016, we hosted our 17th annual Back-to-School Shopping event at Kohl’s in Torrance. This year, the event benefited 73 underprivileged youth in the South Bay. Each pre-selected child was referred by 9 local nonprofit partner agencies and paired with a member of Sandpipers and Sandpiper Juniors who assisted them with selecting and purchasing school clothes, uniforms, shoes and supplies valued at over $400 per child.
The continued support of this program was made possible by Kohl’s, which opened its doors before normal business hours, provided staff for the event, and gave our shoppers an additional 20 percent off and no sales tax. Additionally, Xerox generously donated $1,000 toward lunchboxes filled with snacks, which employees at the company volunteered their time to assemble.
