This year we celebrated 16 years of Back to School Shopping, a favorite program among our agencies and membership alike. As in years past, the event benefited 76 underprivileged youth in the South Bay. Each pre-selected child was referred by a local agency and paired with a Sandpipers member who assisted them with purchasing school clothes and shoes valued at over $200 per child. Each child also received a new backpack full of school supplies and a lunchbox full of snacks.
The continued support of this program was made possible by a generous $5,000 donation from the Sandpipers South Bay Community Fund, headed by the SSBCF Steering Committee. Through new contributions, Sandpipers was able to expand the supplies and other tangible resources provided to the students. Xerox donated $1,000 toward lunchboxes filled with snacks. Employees at the company volunteered their time to assemble them. Jones Lang Lasalle selected Sandpipers to benefit from its collection of back-to-school supplies at their summer beach party. This collection resulted in a donation of more than $500 of school supplies and more than $150 in cash that benefited the program. Kohl’s has also been instrumental for making this event happen by providing and opening the store before normal business hours, staffing the event and providing 20 percent off and no sales tax to all our shoppers.
